HNY

Here we are. 2020. May this year bring you all — us all — what we need for our freedom, our pleasure, our joy, our growth, and our safety. May this be a year where all of us are free in the most fundamental of ways. Where we can fully be ourselves.

I let go of resolutions years ago. Instead, I hold intentions close to my heart as I step into a new year. That said, I love what Maria Popova at Brain Pickings sent in her Midweek pick me up” newsletter yesterday. A couple of highlights:

  1. SØREN KIERKEGAARD: RESIST ABSENTMINDED BUSYNESS Of all ridiculous things the most ridiculous seems to me, to be busy — to be a man who is brisk about his food and his work.
  1. SUSAN SONTAG: PAY ATTENTION TO THE WORLD I’m often asked if there is something I think writers ought to do, and recently in an interview I heard myself say: Several things. Love words, agonize over sentences. And pay attention to the world.”
  1. JAMES BALDWIN: TELL THE WORLD HOW TO TREAT YOU You’ve got to tell the world how to treat you. If the world tells you how you are going to be treated, you are in trouble.
