My dog lies here in the grass, taking in the world as it flows by. His nostrils twitch, pulling in the passing scents. What is he aware of in my neighborhood that I cannot be? What messages are conveyed? Imagine living in a world that was transmitted to you in this way. I’ve heard that a dog can pull in two different scents into toe different nostrils. Like reading two messages at once. He seems fascinated by what is happening around us. Like reading a good book. Something just grabbed his attention; his eyes narrowed, like he was really focusing on that one scent. And then it moved on. There’s an endless array of things we can’t know. What messages are flowing past us that might make our dog friends say, “ah, yes. Of course.”? Life is mostly what we don’t know.
